Obituary for Roy Robert McCord

Roy Robert McCord
On July 19, 2018 Roy Robert McCord passed away at home. Roy had been a resident of Calhan, Colorado for just shy of three months. Roy had previously lived in Livermore, California for over 22 years.

Roy was born in Tumon Heights, Guam on July 5, 1959 to Zern D. and Maria D. McCord and would live there until age nine. At age nine Roy's family would relocate to Moanalua Valley, Hawaii. Roy loved the ocean and all water activities, particularly spearfishing and canoeing. He loved to recount stories of attending school without shoes or a shirt. When Roy was seventeen his family would once again move and this time it was to Fairfield, California. Roy would remain just outside the Bay Area up until the last few months of his life.

Roy is preceded in death by both of his parents and also by two brothers. He leaves behind his wife Becki to whom he was married for 15 years. Also surviving him are two stepsons, Jason (Michelle) and Justin (Michelle) Hattaway, plus three grandchildren. Roy leaves behind two Brothers; Charlie and John McCord. Roy leaves behind six sisters; Marjorie Mendiola, Bobbie Cintron, Arlene Borja, Shirley Johnson, Sandy Smith and Sheila McCord. Additionally, Roy leaves behind countless nieces and nephews, which last totaled 29.

Following High School, Roy worked briefly as a roadie. He also worked for a while servicing the ovens at Pizza Hut locations scattered throughout the Bay Area. Additionally, Roy worked as a grill operator at Mr. Steak. Roy would then work for over ten years at two different lumber yards. Roy would ultimately go on to work for over 20 years as a maintenance supervisor at Portola Park in Livermore, California. Out of all the different jobs that Roy held throughout his life, perhaps none were more rewarding or more gratifying to him than his very first job. Roy's first job was delivering papers around the entire island of Oahu on his mini-bike.

Roy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and family man. Whenever a family member was sick Roy could always be counted on to visit them and offer his concern, support and encouragement.

Roy loved life and was fortunate to have enjoyed many passions. Roy loved children and children loved "Papa Roy." Animals held a special place in his heart, he struggled to ever be around them and not interact with them in some way. He enjoyed traveling, playing golf, bowling, poker games, movies, crossword puzzles, fishing, road trips and cooking. At large gatherings Roy could oftentimes be found managing the grill with both a big smile and an effortless grace. Roy was respected and loved very much by his family and friends and will be severely missed.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at Evergreen Funeral Home, 1830 East Fountain Blvd., Colorado Springs, Colorado 80910.
