Obituary for Norma Jean Smith

Norma Jean Smith
Norma Jean Smith, 85, died Aug. 13, 2017.

Jean was born December 30, 1931, in Garden City, Mo., to Ann and Lawrence Hostetler. In 1943, the family moved to Colorado Springs, where Jean resided for the next 74 years. Jean was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Vincent Hostetler. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Robert “Dr. Bob” Smith; daughter Rhonda (Bill) Crossen and grandchildren Cecelia Crossen and Rob Crossen, all of Denver; and son Scott Smith of Pueblo West.

Jean was an extraordinary wife, mother and grandmother, and a devoted caregiver for her husband. An exceptional cook and baker, she was happiest at home, surrounded by family and friends enjoying the fruits of her culinary labor. Her specialties: world-class peanut brittle, pies with perfect crusts and a never-ending array of scrumptious cookies.

She also enjoyed reading, painting, sewing, gardening, listening to music and loving her many generations of poodles, cats and grand-pets. We will remember Jean’s stubbornness, intellectual curiosity, sense of humor, high standards, creativity, sense of fairness, sunny disposition, beautiful smile, energetic work ethic, quiet strength and big heart.

We will celebrate Jean’s life at 2 p.m. August 24 at Evergreen Funeral Home, with a reception to follow. Attendees are invited to wear or carry something yellow, in honor of her favorite color.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her name to the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, the Wet Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Wetmore, or the charity of your choice.
