Obituary for Jewel M. Kirk (Mondy)

Jewel Kirk, a resident of Colorado Springs, for 69 years, went home to be with her Lord on November 1, 2016 at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 67 ½ years, Tom B. Kirk in 2011. She is survived by two sons, Greg Kirk of Colorado Springs, Brent Kirk and daughter-in-law, Karen Kirk of Greenwood Village, Colorado. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Christopher Noal Kirk of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Erin Nicole Kirk of Chicago, Illinois.

Jewel was born March 15, 1922 on a farm in Pocahontas, Arkansas to Lloyd and Mary Ellen Mondy. She grew up as a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and graduated from Pocahontas High School. She married Tom Kirk on December 25, 1943. They went to Laport, Indiana during WWII where she worked in a munitions factory. In 1947 they came to Colorado Springs to visit family and decided to stay. Jewel worked 7 years for Alexander Film Company until deciding to be a stay at home mom. In 1970 she worked managing the gift shop at the Palmer House Hotel for several years then for 20 years as a church Financial Secretary.
Jewel was an active member of Bethany Baptist Church for 64 years, serving on many boards and as a deaconess and sang in the choir. She worked with children and youth groups. She was a member of the order of Eastern Star, a Cub Scout leader and PTA officer at Bristol Elementary. She also served on the PTA’s County Council. Jewel enjoyed growing flowers, sewing and crocheting, Christmas, her Rockies baseball, and most of all, her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a great example of a wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt, and always supported her family.
Jewel was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, James Dewel Mondy (her twin) and Harrison Mondy, also two sisters, Jessie Pemberton and Alma Vycital. She had many nieces and nephews, brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws that she loved and was very close to.
Viewing will be available from 4pm-6pm on Friday, November 4 at Evergreen Funeral Home, 1830 E. Fountain Blvd. Funeral Services will be at 2pm on Saturday, November 5 also at Evergreen Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery.
